Weekly links, 6th grade - "This is Houston" and "Matter"

Good Afternoon!

After this exciting day, having a good time in the bowling, I'm going to summarize the most important things of the week.

English

In the English class, we have started unit 7, entitled: "This is Houston", in which our friends, Phoebe, Alex and Patrick, travel in time until 1969, in the very exact moment in which the Astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin land on the moon. We have also talked about electronic music, and we have watch several videos.

The first one is  a wonderful Spanish example of Techno Pop in the 80's with the song "Laika" by Mecano. The song is obviously in Spanish, but the style and the topic of the song, with the story of Laika, as the first astronaut, is enough to do an exception.

Next, we have a video with pictures and English subtitles of the first landing on the moon of the Eagle Lunar Module, in 1969.

We have also watched this interesting video about the daily life of astronauts in a space ship.

Finally we have watched this video of David Bowie singing "Space Oddity".

Natural and Social Sciences

During these classes, most of you have finished the mural about matter, and next week we'll present the next units of the two subjects. I will put here pictures of all your murals in the next post.

Arts & Crafts

This week, most of you have brought the compass and the rulers, and you have been able to complete the first exercises, drawing a hexagon and a six-pointed star. I will also put some pictures next week.

And this is all.

See you next Monday!

Weekly links, 6th grade - "Food Inventions", "Matter" and "Modern Spain: the 20th century" 6

Good afternoon!

We have had a short but very intense week, with the tests of Natural and Social Sciences. Yes, I know that you have also had other tests:-)

English

After doing the English test last week, we have worked with a new interesting unit of the book "Reading and Writing", entitled "Food inventions".

Apart from that, you have continued working with Emily with the preparation of the speaking activities for the KET and PET exams. In this sense, and in order to improve your skills in this matter, she has sent us the next links with some videos of real speaking tests. Emily, as always, thank you very much for your helpful and wonderful work!

We strongly recommend you to watch them:

KET speaking part 1

KET speaking part 2

PET total. Good example

PET speaking part 1

PET speaking part 2

PET speaking part 3

PET speaking part 4

Natural and Social Science

In the two subjects, we have worked in the preparation of the two tests that we have done at the end of the week. Next week, we will continue with the murals about "Matter", and we will start a new unit in Social Science, about Spain's politics.

Arts & Crafts

I don't usually talk about this, although you know that is my favourite subject, but I want to insist on the importance of bringing the drawing tools to the class. Always! Today, for example, we have tried to work with the compass, drawing a hexagon and a star from a circle and its radius, and you have seen how difficult can be this if most of you forget the compass and we have to share it...

Have a good weekend!

Weekly links, 6th grade - "Crazy Inventions", "Matter" and "Modern Spain: the 20th century" 5

Good afternoon!

We have a long weekend to enjoy, but remember that you have also enough time to review and study for the tests that we will do next week, in Natural and Social Sciences. In this brief post I am going to remind you the main things of the week.

English

We have finished unit 6, "Crazy Inventions" and we have done the test today. As usual, we will do a new exercise of writing next week, that will be part of the final mark for this unit.

Apart from the test, we have had enough time to see a very short but wonderful presentation of Saint Patrick's Day, prepared and presented by Emily.

Natural Science

In Natural Science, we have done the revison lesson and we have started a group work in which you have to summarize the main contents of the unit in one mural. We have also done more worksheets. Remember the importance of finishing them to be properly prepared for the test that we will do this week (group A, on Thursday and group B, on Wednesday).

Social Science

Finally, in Social Science, we have completed the lesson "What happened in Spain since 1975?", and we have also introducing the lesson "How have art and culture developed?", talking about some of the most important artists in the 20th century, such as Picasso, Miró or Dalí.

We haven't watched more videos, but you can see here two photos of paintings by Picasso and Dalí and two versions based on these that I painted many years ago (they are very old and I only have them in small size).

"Cristo de San Juan de la Cruz" - Salvador Dalí, 1951

We will finish the revision lesson next week and the Social Science tests will be: on Thursday, for group B, and Friday, for group A.

Enjoy your double weekend! :-)

Weekly links, 6th grade - "Crazy Inventions", "Matter" and "Modern Spain: the 20th century" 4

Hello everybody!

As always, I'm going to try to summarize the main things we have done this week.

English

We have continued with the unit "Crazy Inventions", thus, we have seen the story of the unit, always funny and interesting, and we have also practised some exercises for the KET exam this Friday. As well, Emily helped us doing a dictation about Art and museums.

Remember to study for the test of unit 6 that we will do next Thursday!

Natural Science

In this subject, we finished the lesson about chemical changes, doing a simple experiment with a long glass and a candle, to check the importance of oxygen in the combustion process. We have also studied the concepts of oxidation and fermentation. In this case, Emily has helped us again doing an interesting experiment, with pieces of apple reacting in different environments.

We have watched the next video about global warming, as a consequence of combustion:

Social Science

We have continued talking about Spain during Franco's dictatorship, and we have also focused on what happened in our country since 1975. Highlighting the importance of the transition to democracy, we have seen the video with the electoral manifesto of Adolfo Suarez for the 1977 elections. Probably, the most important discourse in our recent history, by a great man. Undoubtedly, the most honest and hardworker president that we could have in so complicated period.

See you next week!

Weekly links, 6th grade - "Crazy Inventions", "Matter" and "Modern Spain: the 20th century" 3

Good Afternoon!

Before the weekly links, you can read here our Carnival Proclamation, that Rocío Gómez and Martin read last Tuesday in front of your parents, teachers and mates. You were wonderful, as well as the presentation made by Laura and Uther, and all the students and teachers that participated in the celebration.

Pregón de Carnaval 2017 -  C.E.I.P. “Ciudad de Córdoba”

Queridos compañeros, alumnos, padres, maestros y demás profesionales, de éste nuestro colegio y de todo el mundo mundial:

Antes de decir adiós
al breve mes de febrero
celebramos, como siempre
un día carnavalero.

Salimos de nuestras aulas
con aire profesional,
vestidos para el trabajo,
más no para trabajar.

Sin gatos, ni sindicatos,
sin sueldos… que ya vendrán,
simplemente disfrutando
de esta fiesta popular.

Camareros, de tres años,
médicos, de cuatro ya,
si alguien se nos desmaya,
bien atendido estará.

Pintores de brocha gorda,
de fina, lo somos más,
bomberos, “apagaincendios”
también os atenderán.

Domadores de leones,
y fieras varias vendrán,
gondoleros de Venecia,
que lejos de Italia están.

Submarinistas valientes,
sin agua bucearán,
Y cocineros fervientes,
que hoy no cocinarán.

¡La sardina, no se come!,
aunque se haya muerto ya.
Hoy juntos la enterraremos,
Con mucho duelo y pesar.

¡FELIZ DÍA DE CARNAVAL!

English

This week, we starting doing the test of unit 5, about London. Then, we continued on Wednesday with unit 6, titled "Crazy Inventions" and, finally, we have done some preparation exercises for the Ket exam, this Friday.

We have watched this funny video about crazy inventions made by children, in the famous show of Ellen Degeneres:

Natural Science

In the unit about matter, we have studied the different ways in which we can separate mixtures, such as filtration, evaporation, distillation and dissolution. We have also started to talk about chemical changes.

Apart from some interesting videos from the webpage "Elesapiens", we have watched these videos from youtube:

Distillation and filtration

Separating a Mixture of Salt and Sand

What are endothermic and exothermic reactions?

Social Science

In Social Science, we have continued talking about the Spanish Civil War and its consequences, and we have started a new lesson about Spain during Franco's dictatorship. Because I was born in 1963, as a child, I lived the last years of this dictatorship. So, I have talked about my own experience and how the social and political transition really started a few years before the death of Franco. As an example, in group A (by the moment) we have watched a short video about the inauguration of the labor university of Cheste, in 1970, where I was lucky to study between 1974 and 1977, the 6º, 7º and 8º years of the old E.G.B. In that place, we were taught what democracy was, by wonderful teachers and educators who were fighting for liberty and democracy from the inside:

El Centro de Orientación de Universidades Laborales en el No-Do

We have also watched part of a video of the TV series "Cuéntame como pasó". Specifically, the chapter in which Admiral Carrero Blanco was killed by the Basque terrorist group ETA in 1973. If you want to watch it, you have here the link:

Have a good weekend!
